Simpson Millar snaps up EAD Solicitors in Liverpool

Simpson Millar has acquired Liverpool-based law firm EAD Solicitors as it embarks on its new £50 million investment plan following its acquisition earlier this year.

The deal enables Simpson Millar to extend its geographical footprint into the Northwest, adding to its network of 8 offices across the UK while building on EAD’s strong reputation in Liverpool and its close relationship with a number of large trade unions.

The acquisition of EAD will see more than 70 members of staff, including 11 partners, join Simpson Millar. The combined firm will comprise of just over 470 employees, with a fee income of £30 million.

Ian Cohen, who was recently appointed as national head of personal injury and medical negligence, and is a member of Simpson Millar’s senior management team, will be based in the new office in Liverpool.

Greg Cox, CEO of Simpson Millar, said: “EAD Solicitors is an excellent fit with Simpson Millar. Both firms share a similarly rich heritage of supporting trade unions and the trade union movement. We believe that the combined firm can better service its existing clients.”

“After securing significant investment in the business from its owners, we are very excited about the future and the potential opportunities that lie ahead for the combined business.”

The acquisition of EAD follows a strategic review of Simpson Millar by the management team after Doorway, an independent and specialist provider of capital to law firms, became the firm’s new owner in January.

Simpson Millar’s new £50 million, five-year growth strategy will see the firm invest substantial sums in marketing, technology and in developing its people, while also attracting new talent.

The acquisition of EAD is one of a number of similar deals that Simpson Millar is currently reviewing. These ongoing discussions range from the purchase of existing books of business to the acquisition of other law firms.

Cathy Fielding, a partner at EAD who will join the Simpson Millar team, said: “This is a deal that works for both businesses, reflecting our shared values of putting our clients first. This acquisition strengthens the legal offer to clients across the region and we are delighted to be joining Simpson Millar.”

Steve Din from Doorway added: “Doorway is excited about EAD becoming part of Simpson Millar. Since acquiring Simpson Millar, we have been working with its senior management team to give the firm access to the capital and other resources it will need to achieve its growth strategy and to make strategic acquisitions such as EAD.”
