Howard Elgot

Parklane Plowden Chambers

Howard is one of the very few provincial barristers to have been shortlisted as Barrister of the Year by the Law Society. He has acted in many cases of national importance in the High Court, Court of Appeal, the House of Lords and the Supreme Court.

He is routinely recommended in legal directories for his expertise in clinical negligence, with one client stating: “My greatest praise for Howard is when he is in court—he is a brilliant advocate.” [Chambers and Partners, 2019)

Recently Howard appeared as leading counsel in the Supreme Court in Barton v Wright Hassall, the leading authority on the extent to which litigants in person should be granted special dispensation in relation to the Civil Procedure Rules.

Howard has a large high-profile clinical negligence practice and regularly acts as counsel in cases involving cerebral palsy and other obstetric negligence, other brain and spinal injury cases as well as orthopaedic cases and fatal psychiatric claims. His clinical negligence practice is almost entirely representing claimants.“He’s relentless in his pursuit of a case and clear in his assessment of its strengths and weaknesses. He handles medical experts and opposing counsel well and is not intimidated by anybody.” [Chambers and Partners, 2019)
